Look out for HTTPS in secure areas

Generally websites use a standard connection called HTTP but secure websites use an encrypted connection called HTTPS (The S stands for Secure and comes from an SSL certificate). Here's how you can tell whether or not a website's connection is secure. Our homepage uses http as you can see below. There is no reason for a secure connection on our homepage as customers don't need to enter any details. As soon as you login or click APPLY NOW you enter a secure area where your personal/banking details that you submit are encrypted. Should any information be intercepted, it will be unintelligible without the unique key used for decryption. (Source: Thwate: Facts about SSL ) Getting a HTTPS connection means you are a reputable organization.

Look out for the lock icon

Another tell-tale sign of a secure website is the lock icon which usually appears in the bottom right-hand corner of your web browser.

This is a secure site. Click the seal above to verify.

A secure website uses a method of encryption to transfer data across the Internet. Websites can either be fully or partially secured or completely unsecured.  Web pages that are used for general browsing are usually not secured whilst pages which may be used to transmit sensitive information (such as credit card details, applications or personal information) are generally secured. Take a look at the information in the right sidebar to learn more.                                                                                                     What is SSL?                                                                                                             SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers.

DID YOU KNOW...

Encryption strength is measured in key length — number of bits in the key. To decipher an SSL communication, one needs to generate the correct decoding key. Mathematically speaking, 2n possible values exist for an n-bit key. Thus, 40-bit encryption involves 240 possible values, 128-bit encryption 2128 combinations, and 256-bit keys involves a staggering 2256 possible combinations, rendering the encrypted data de facto impervious to intrusion. Even with a brute-force attack (the process of systematically trying all possible combinations until the right one is found) cracking a 256-bit encryption is computationally unfeasible.
